A key challenge most women (and men) in leadership struggles with is building a successful team. Leadership is not automatic; therefore, what are some key strategies required to build and lead a successful team for 2013?
Here are 3 key that will guarantee building a successful team.
Key #1 … Develop structure. Be sure everyone on the team knows his or her role and responsibilities. When team members don’t know their role and responsibilities it promotes confusion and chaos. Be sure to sit down with each team member to discuss performance as well to ensure expectations. It’s important everyone knows what is expected of them.
Key #2 … Develop direction. Ensure that the purpose and the importance of the team are made clear that all understand. This includes developing communicating the vision and mission, as well as goals and objectives.
Key #3 … Involve your team. Fully engage your team to participate in meetings and share ideas. Listen carefully and be sure that everyone has a chance to voice their opinion. Sometimes, you may decide not follow ideas shared; however, your team will appreciate the opportunity of being heard. Additionally, leverage the differences in experiences, talents and gifts. Discerning the strengths of each team member can only bring value in achieving goals.
Keep in mind that your goal as a leader is to encourage your team to work together towards a common goal. Take time to write down your ideas on how you can identify the things you need to work on to ensure the successful building of your team. Finally, commit to follow-through on putting those ideas into practice the next time opportunity arises.
